I tend to have a short attention span when it comes to things, stories and movies that are boring or at least appear to be at first sight. The Titanic was one such movie, at least I thought so. There was so much hype surrounding The Titanic that I thought it couldn’t be that good. After all the plot was about rich and poor people on a boat. The boat sinks…rich people saved, poor people lost. I know that sounds pretty morbid, but that’s what I thought.

imagesOne day while scrolling through TV stations I stopped at HBO, It happened at the end of the movie. I thought it was interesting…it was what seemed to be a love story. As you know, HBO as with most cable movie channels shows the same movie for at least a month so that you can catch it almost anytime. A couple of weeks later I caught the middle…so now I’m all in. I want to see how this movie started. Poor Jack Dawson saves the life of socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater. Because of his heroism, Jack is invited to the Captains Table for dinner that evening. Jack is confused by all the silverware, plates and glasses on the table and feels more inadequate than when he first arrived. At that point a lovely older woman Molly Brown is sitting next to him…she says the iconic words; just work from the outside in. Jack is immediately put at ease.

It was at that moment Finer Things Academy was born. It hit me that people (young, old, school age, re-entry to workforce, etc.) can do wonderful things, become productive human beings, and attain a 4.0 grade point average with effort and discipline. However, none of that means anything if they don’t know how to speak, carry themselves…and yes sell you on the very best they have to offer.

So in July of 1999, Finer Things Academy set out to give the tools necessary to help our students and clients socially succeed!
